I’m completely hacked off about this situation!!!
Phone hacking is a criminal offence. Any organization found to be complicit in criminal activity should be prosecuted, and separate action brought against the journalists, editors, managers and board of directors.
The police should also be investigated on charges of corruption for their handling of this case, and their relationship with News Corp and the media probed fully by a public enquiry.
If both of these do not happen, it will be proof to the masses that the law does not apply to the rich and powerful, and that the police have absolutely no interest or credibility in investigating serious organised crime. Best that they stick to giving out speeding tickets, its all they know how to do, although they cant even do that right.
The hacking into the phones of Millie Dowler, the parents of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, and the relatives of the victims of 7/7, are just the top of the iceberg. This is not only about a newspaper targeting individuals and violating their right to privacy. Nor it is only about the illegality of these actions. The abuse of power by NoW has far reaching consequences. In all its ramifications it has to do with the British Constitution and the fate of this limping democracy.
As the emails sent yesterday to the Police show, NoW has been paying the police for information. And the person who did so, Andy Coulson, was the press officer for the Prime Minister. As a number of MPs have already said in a low voice, they are discouraged to ‘put questions’ to NoW executives for fear of putting a speedy and early end to their political careers. Despite all the evidence at their disposal, the police has refused to initiate an all encompassing investigation into NoW for a number of years, blocking the possibility of the judiciary to act, and ensuring impunity. Coincidentally, at least since 1997, the candidate supported by the NoW has won the general election.
So NoW has built up such a dreadful power that violates the human rights of individuals, corrupts the police, blocks the parliament, advises and supports the Prime Minister, ensures the judicial system does not touch it, and has an illegitimate say in choosing the head of government.
Thanks to Lord Prescott, Hugh Grant and the many others who have felt strongly enough to give us a chance to make a change. #notw must stop any phone hacking and a general code must be agreed to ensure journalism wins over illegal activity.
I am encouraging friends to boycott all Murdoch titles and services. So far no-one has even done a “like” to my exhortation on FB.
I think it is really hard to ween people off what they think as their right – eg Sky Sports. I’m really disappointed.
Sky Sports or support for the moral high ground? Difficult decision? I like it.
The Government needs to understand that they are in Parliament to serve the electorate. If they fail in this they are replaced. Not after four years, when they fail in their job. Any fiddling ie expenses, then they are immediately dismissed, no second chances. If the current law does not allow this to happen, then it is easily changed
I have been boycotting Murdoch titles since the Miners Strike in 1984/85 when the vilest campaign against the miners took place. This gave Thatcher a free reign to attack the working class and which led to a low wage economy. The latest revelations are just a mere continuation of the contempt that Murdoch and his associates have for the British public at large. The News of the World has always been known as the tit and bum paper, now we can add the tit,bum and scum paper. Yet even now Jeremy Hunt and his cowardly colleagues look set to hand over even more of the British media to a billionaire who does not even pay any taxes in the country. A plague on all your houses!
The same paper that defamed the Miners, and the Hillsborough victims now tells us the public dont care about press regulation.
114000 people in 48 hrs disagree with that observation, Well done.
Phone hacking may be justified in fighting crime or in cases of national security. No thinking person would argue with that. And although the invasion of privacy of actors and politicians did not touch us, they also have their rights to privacy as much as the next person.
But when this was used to hack Milly Dowler’s phone when she was still missing, these people played with her life and with an ongoing criminal investigation. They played with the feelings of their family and with the ability of the police to make the right calls. A line was crossed and there is no way back. Heads should roll, and justice must be served (one way or another).
I have a first hand experience of how News of the World deal with “evidence” and how they publish it. I was the forensic consultant on the Artur Boruc v Newsgroup and I have a direct insight as to how a man’s privacy is invaded.
I will be happy to offer my services to this cause as a Digital Forensics Consultant.
I find it quite alarming the decision by the prime minister to try and argue against the Leverson report with regard to under pinning by law a new body to over see the press. Surely after such revolting behaviour by the mainstream press, it is essential to protect the innocent from having their private lives intruded in such disturbing ways.
I would imagine as the press are in the main supporters of the conservatives, Mr Cameron is thinking a few years ahead.
It’s time the politicians acted in the interest of the general public and not their own. I sincerely hope they do.
I have never been hacked however from previous personal experience i know the truth is altered to suit what will sell newspapers. This has been going on for more than 40 years. Hacking is a diabolical invasión of privacy and as the newspapers have proved they are incapable of any self control or respect of people’s personal lives. An independent limited ‘overseer’ would be welcome.
Who paid for the enquiry? What makes Cameron think he can order an enquiry and then just ignore it’s findings because he doesn’t like the findings? I am sorry Mr Cameron, but you are an idiot! And now everyone can see it clearly…..
That is freedom of speech and that is not what everyone wants to stop. Just to be able to hold the press accountable for things that are wrong, like hillsbourgh, hacking and treating anyone the way they think they can do without any comeback. I think everyone is sick of the press lying or hurting people without a second thought, make them accountable to someone who will make them think twice. Give them powers to stop their publication for a period of time, print a front page apology for wrong doing, heavy fines that hurt, Ban reporters or editors from working in the UK?
What have the press got on Cameron I wonder?
