The Government is planning new laws to regulate what we can all say on social media, but not everyone will be treated the same.

What newspapers say on social media will be protected under the bill – simply because they are newspapers.

What’s more, newspaper comment sections also won’t count under the new laws, so newspapers will be able to go on hosting hateful, abusive comments in them.

We believe that this is wrong: the new laws should treat us all the same, whether we run a newspaper or not.  If it’s wrong for a member of the public to say something on the internet, it should be wrong for a newspaper to say it too.  And if it shouldn’t appear on Twitter, it shouldn’t appear in a comment section either.

We rely on people like you to make a difference.
