The lecture, entitled “Democracy in Crisis: Brexit & The Rise of Fake News” was delivered by British journalist, television presenter, author and broadcaster James O’Brien. James follows in the footsteps of previous speakers Baroness Warsi, Rt Hon Tom Watson MP, Sir Vince Cable MP, David Yelland, and Jo Brand.
A controversial figure at the forefront of the Brexit debate, James has also been an outspoken critic of some elements of the press’ handling of the issues at stake in the EU referendum.
While the press should always be free to campaign and editorialise, some newspapers published clear inaccuracies in the run to the referendum, with no independent press self-regulator existing to ensure the record was adequately recorded before the vote.
