Hacked Off call for IPSO investigation into press coverage of Nicola Bulley investigation

At 10am today, the College of Policing published its Independent external review of Lancashire Constabulary’s operational response to reported missing person Nicola Bulley.

Hacked Off’s CEO Nathan Sparkes commented,

It is clear from today’s report that Lancashire Constabulary have plenty to answer for in their handling of the investigation into the disappearance of Nicola Bulley, and it is right that an independent review has taken place.

But it is equally clear that speculative and ultimately untrue press reports on the case significantly complicated the investigation. Today’s report cites coverage in the Daily Star, The Sun, The Daily Mirror and The Independent as “speculation and opinion”, which distorted the public’s understanding of the case.

The report also highlights the press’ willingness to publicise the opinions and predictions of underwater search expert Peter Faulding, many of which did not come true. Mr Faulding defended his interactions with the media, claiming he was “hounded” by outlets.

National newspapers must take their share of the blame for contributing to the rumours and untruths which damaged this investigation. If it had any credibility at all, the press-controlled complaints-handler “IPSO” would establish a thorough investigation into the coverage of the case.
